Freight wagon conversion
Project Description
Engineering work focused on modifying and adapting a conventional railcar for conversion into a specialized industrial transport unit. The transformation involves the design and integration of a high-capacity tank for long-distance liquid transport, ensuring the structural stability of the chassis and safety during fluid conveyance.
Industrial Sector
Transport (rail)
Technological Challenge
The main technical challenge was calculating and dampening the effect of fluid sloshing during the train’s acceleration, braking, and cornering, as this can seriously compromise the stability of the trainset. It was necessary to design an internal system of baffle plates, optimize the load distribution across the wagon’s bogies, and integrate rapid filling and emptying connections featuring spill-prevention systems and overpressure valves.
Development
Our company’s work focused on the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) phase regarding mechanical strength and regulatory compliance. Tasks included performing calculations to define the tank and its mounting on the frame, designing equipment layout schemes, and preparing the technical approval dossier required to meet safety regulations for the rail transport of goods.
Result
The delivery of the detailed design and engineering documentation established the precise technical specifications for the subsequent conversion of the railcar. Careful planning on paper made it possible to validate the safety of the assembly and optimize the tank’s load capacity, providing an efficient transport solution fully tailored to the industry’s logistical needs. Finally, the railcar passed the inspections by a notified body, and 1,500 units were produced.
